Abstract

The Maisi Aleh Dulang tradition is part of the traditional wedding ceremony practiced by the community of Nagari Alahan Panjang, Lembah Gumanti District, Solok Regency. The tradition represents respect and family responsibility while strengthening kinship relations. This study aims to analyze the standards and practices of Maisi Aleh Dulang and examine the shift toward materialistic values and its impact on kinship relations. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Informants were selected purposively and included traditional leaders, community leaders, the bride and groom’s families, and community members involved in the tradition. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data validity was examined through source and technique triangulation, while data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings show that there are no written customary rules regulating the amount and types of aleh dulang contents; standards of appropriateness are constructed through social habits and community judgments. The contents have shifted from traditional food and basic necessities to modern household goods. This shift indicates a tendency toward materialistic values because economic value and social appropriateness are increasingly considered, although the tradition continues to strengthen kinship and mutual cooperation.
