Abstract

The study employed a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The informants consisted of final-year students and lecturers in the PPKn Study Program, Faculty of Social Sciences, Padang State University, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis employed the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that AI has become a supporting tool in students' study completion, particularly for overcoming difficulties in understanding materials, finding research ideas, obtaining references, developing research structures, and improving academic writing. ChatGPT was the most dominant application, followed by Gemini and Perplexity. An important finding of this study is that students' behavior does not stop at obtaining answers from AI. Students provide prompts according to their needs, read and understand AI outputs, check and compare information with other sources, and then adapt and further develop the information using their own thinking. In the context of academic ethics, students interpret AI as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for their thinking ability and academic responsibility. AI use behavior is analyzed through performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions based on the UTAUT framework. These findings indicate that the phenomenon of AI use among students lies not only in the intensity of technology use but also in how students control and process AI outputs to meet academic needs and maintain academic ethics.
