Abstract

Urban slums are a social problem closely linked to poverty, limited access to decent work, poor environmental quality, and instability in meeting basic needs. These conditions are exacerbated when communities face fires that result in the loss of homes, possessions, and livelihoods. This study aims to analyze the survival strategies of residents of the Kapuk Muara slum area, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, specifically those of five families affected by the fire, and to identify factors influencing the implementation of these strategies. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation with five families affected by the fire and supporting informants from the local community. The results show that community survival strategies are carried out through various informal sector jobs, such as trading or opening small stalls, working as swallow feather cleaners, collecting scrap, and working as online motorcycle taxi drivers. In addition, social strategies through utilizing family networks, neighborhood solidarity, and support from the surrounding environment are also important in maintaining household life. The application of survival strategies is influenced by difficulties in obtaining formal employment, lack of alternative housing, the presence of children attending school nearby, and the length of time residents have resided in Kapuk Muara. This research confirms that the survival strategies of the urban poor are multidimensional, encompassing economic, social, and family aspects simultaneously.
