Peran tokoh adat terhadap kehidupan sosial masyarakat pada era modernisasi

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of traditional leaders in the social life of the community, as well as the efforts made to preserve traditional values amid the tide of modernization in Nagari Simpang Tonang Selatan, Dua Koto Subdistrict, Pasaman Regency. The study employs a qualitative approach using descriptive methods. Research informants were selected using purposive sampling, including traditional leaders, village officials, religious leaders, and community members. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Data validity was tested through triangulation of methods. The results of the study indicate that traditional leaders continue to play a vital role as guardians of traditional values, preservers of culture, social regulators, mediators in conflict resolution, and partners of the village government in conducting deliberations and community development. In this era of modernization, traditional leaders have undertaken various adaptive measures, including increasing participation in social and religious activities, nurturing the younger generation through the preservation of traditions, strengthening communication with the village government, and adapting the practice of customs to the changing times without losing the cultural values that have been passed down. This study concludes that modernization does not eliminate the existence of traditional leaders but rather drives a transformation of their roles so that they remain relevant in maintaining the social life of the community and the preservation of customs in Nagari Simpang Tonang Selatan.
